Feedback: Reviews and flames are welcome. (They make it look like I'm writing fast)
Notes: Short depressing little ficlet written in that twenty minutes between being ready for the day and it being time to leave for work.
When Wilson sees House come into work, he doesn’t think much of the slow, hesitant way House is walking. House has been walking that way for almost a week, and Wilson figures he pulled something, probably in his left leg, and that he’s fine. If he weren’t, he’d tell Wilson.
Wilson hasn’t been paying enough attention to know that it hasn’t been a week, it’s been a month, and it’s been getting worse every day. And Wilson definitely hasn’t been paying enough attention to notice the blond that has followed House into the elevator every morning. Why would he notice that? It’s just Chase, they probably have a case.
What Wilson has been missing is that the minute the elevator doors close, House is on the floor, the stop button pressed. What Wilson has been missing is that Chase is kneeling next to him, and wrapping his arms around him, not out of some gesture of comfort, but helping him hold still, because he can’t handle the level of pain it takes to get from his parking space to the elevator.
What Wilson is missing is that by the time the stop button is pressed a second time, House is gasping and halfway limp, but still upright, and still standing straight once the elevator doors open. What Wilson is missing is that Chase chatting with him about a case is to get him to the office without anyone knowing he’s about to collapse. What Wilson is missing is that foreman and Taub haven’t been into the diagnostics office in weeks, and that thought patients have been being diagnosed, it’s just been Chase and sometimes House doing it.
What Wilson doesn’t know is that Cuddy is doing what House asked, and working on the paperwork to dissolve the diagnostics department altogether. Chase said he didn’t want to run it, foreman still isn’t ready, and Cameron definitely couldn’t even been considered.
What Wilson doesn’t know is House is still showing up because he has two days left before he can retire, and that paperwork’s a lot easier than the stuff he has to fill out if he quits. What Wilson doesn’t know is that while Chase is into to work every day two hours before House, they are coming from the same place. What Wilson doesn’t know is that when House goes home, Chase will already be there, and when House loses to the overwhelming pain, Chase will already be there.
What Wilson doesn’t know, is that when House crawls into bed, shivering and shaking with pain that can’t be fixed, Chase will already be there, the heating pad will already be plugged in and ready to relieve as much pain as it can, and Chase’s arms will already be open.
